Almost gave this place two stars but the food was able to bump this review up one star. The service was average, the restaurant wasn't the cleanest and the margaritas were like sugar water with very little tequila. They do refill your chips and salsa regularly but the salsa can be compared to a spicy marinara sauce at best. As a local I can safely say this was my one and only time coming here.

I see there are mixed reviews.... But this place rocks. I had the beef enchiladas and my son had the street style tacos. Both were awesome. I recommend the Green Chili too!

We were excited to try this place but it fell short. To start, the salsa they brought with the chips had little flavor. And the margarita we had was not good at all - very syrupy. My mom and sister shared the chicken fajitas. They were decent but my sister thought the vegetables tasted moldy and I don't disagree. I had the taco salad with chicken. There were a few pieces of iceberg lettuce in it, totally drowned and wilted by the green chili they poured over it. No other vegetables were in the salad. The service was okay and I thought the building was well kept. The bathroom was clean and the decor was nice. Sadly though, the food and drink fell short. We won't be back.

Should have left once I tasted the salsa! My enchilada wasn't even hot but my taco was ok... Maybe I'm just use to New Mexico mexican food where it's more authentic ...you live and you learn just hope my stomach lives haha

I wanted to like this place. It seemed pretty cute from the outside but oh man, horrible food. The server was nice and very attentive but was obviously super busy which I wasn't worried about but other people were heard grumbling. We had the chips and salsa which was alright and the enchiladas were disgusting. Wet cardboard tasting actually. I cannot believe people have been raving about this food, maybe I was spoiled living in Texas for a few years but I would rather do Taco Bell for the price. Skip this place!

BAD. Sorry to say as we had eaten there a few years ago and we remembered enjoying it. The waitress was super sweet and attentive, she simply had a poor product to deliver. Chips/stale, salsa/bland and if homemade, which I doubt, Mama needs a new recipe. The condiments were refilled bottles of off brand ketchup/mustard. I will say there did seem to be a fair number of locals. That may speak volumes about Mexican in Canon City.

We came in with a big group and they were accommodating. The food was good and the staff was very pleasent. It was very clean.

Good food and good service. Fish tacos are the best and probably the only in town! Clean dining and bathroom areas. Friendly staff Good for groups

We love this place & try to eat here each time we visit Cañon City. Hasn't disappointed us yet! Try the green chile sauce & the strawberry margaritas.

You could almost believe this place has the same owners as some of the other Mexican restaurants in town. So, don't expect variation or authenticity when eating here. Special orders such as carne asada chimichangas aren't accepted or welcomed. The waitress was willing to at least ask and came back saying the guys in the kitchen don't know how they would make it so not to fall apart or something to that affect. She added that they really don't like when she asks such questions. I ended up getting a shredded beef burrito that tasted like it had been watered down to keep the filling from drying out as it was stored in a steam table. What an utter disappointment. The thing was small, covered with sauce like a "slopper burger" and the beef was bland. There are better places in Pueblo or Colorado Springs of course, but that's like 40-45mins away. Canon's Mexican food restaurants are all the same and no better than school cafeteria food. Missions fair is even served on the same colored plastic plates most middle schools used. Do yourself a favor and just head over to City Market's frozen food department and skip the vanilla Mexican food, tomato paste salsa, and cold corn chips. Old Mission's Mexican food looked as good as it tasted, and sadly that's a very, very bad thing.

My husband and I just got home from eating at The Old Mission, had not there for years and it will be years before we go back again. To enjoy their food you must like everything slopped with red or green chili. I am from Ca. and not use to Mexican food served that way. My husband had a burrito slopped with green chili, he said it was pretty good, not GOOD. I had the pork street tacos and they were NOT good. Don't know what they did to the pork, it didn't look like meat nor did it taste like pork, to make it worse it was full of fat and gristle. Canon City is not know for its great food of any kind but there are better Mexican restaurants here.

Great friendly service. Food came out fast. Reasonable prices For tex mex style food, above average in taste and quality I'd recommend it!

Had the steak and cheese burrito, pretty good stuff. Steak was cooked right, good portion size. Hot green chili has a good bite, but will not impress chili heads. Mild has no heat whatsoever.

First off, the food here is average. It's not fantastic Mexican, but it's more than decent, and definitely closer to authentic than most other places in Canon City. The atmosphere is actually what I prefer about this place. Inside, it's cozy, but you have the option to sit outside on the covered patio, which is a nice change, especially during a warm summer evening. It's also a seat yourself option, so you get whatever and wherever you can when you arrive. I've never eaten during a rush, so I have no idea how that would affect my feelings towards that aspect, but when we went, it wasn't bad. The service is okay. I've never been disappointed with it, but it's not fantastic or special, just satisfactory. The dress uniform actually surprises me, because it's fairly casual with tank tops, but it doesn't detract from anything. Would recommend it if you're in the mood for something above the greasy tacos from the taco stands but still pretty casual, but if you're looking for more authentic Mexican dining with a classier feel, it's not necessarily the place for you.

I'd give it a zero if I could. It was the worst food I've ever paid to much for. Seat yourself, really!? 10 minutes for a menu, f'n seriously!? Kitchen is closing at 9:00 on a friday in a tourist town, are you stupid!? Bring food, do you want dessert, go f yourself!? Half way through trying to gag the food down, because we're starving, ask do you want a to go box. No I want a barf bag, you ignorant puke!? Didn't even care that we didn't touch our food, nice!? Please close at 9:00 tonight for good!!! Don't open tomorrow! DO NOT GO HERE. IF YOU LIKE THIS BULLSHIT, YOU'RE INSANE!

I'll give this place a star for the covered patio seating. Came here on a Sunday and had the entire place to ourselves, and now I know why. Ordered two tacos on white, and guess what? An extra dollar to deep fry them?... the owner must be related to Jorges in Pueblo. The ground beef taco was passable, but the chorizo taco was too hot (picante) to eat. My partner had a chili relleno, and it was ridiculous. As another reviewer said (I read it too late), the cheese wasn't melted inside and it looked like a corn dog from the fair. The chili on the side was passable. Herdez salsa definitely out of the can, and out of the bag chips. Gross.

This has been my favorite restaurant for 20+ years, but I will say that the quality of food and service has gone down and the prices have gone up, significantly. When I come to Canon I always try to eat here, but the service isn't what it used to be and I notice little things with the food like the fact that they don't smother my food with much green chili anymore. I still recommend it, but I do wish that management would work on getting the service and quality back up to what it used to be.

Ok, this one was all our fault - we deserved it. When we walked in, they said "seat yourself" and both tables we could choose were still dirty we should have just walked out..... The chips were marginal, the chili relleno was literally the *worst* ever experienced.....everything else was so-so. Save yourself the hassle-- buy a 6-pack of beer and get Taco Bell from the drive-thru. Or drive several hours to ANY other place, it will be time well spent.

The chips, salsa, and guacamole were delicious and I loved them more then anything. I had to use all my will power to stop eating them. But when my dinner came, (the chile relleno platter) I took a bite and it was the most absolutely and most amazingly disgusting platter I have ever been served at a Mexican restaurant. There was almost no cheese inside the Chile and the pepper was fried so that all you could taste was fried batter. Overall, it was inedible. But however what really earned this restaurant it's whopping score of one star was the fact that you could hear the female staff in the kitchen yelling inappropriate words such as "gigolo" and other such terms so loud that everyone in the restaurant stopped and wondered about the vile dialogue that was spewing from the kitchen. So I suggest that even though the chips, salsa, and guacamole I are there are some of the best I have ever had, it's not worth the poor food quality and the crude discussions coming from the kitchen.

Decent Mexican food, but there is better available in Canon City. Service isn't very good - at least in the 3 times we've been there.

The best Mexican in Canon City. There's a covered patio in front if you don't want to sit inside.

Stopped here at random on my way through Canon City, and I enjoyed it enough that I will definitely look them up again when I'm in town. I like the atmosphere, with several smaller rooms and the patio. The chips (though not homemade) and salsa were fine. I will give thumbs-down to the relleno, as others have here. I think it's clear they need to re-think that menu item. My tamale was very good, and the green chile tasty. They also serve a corn-squash-onion veggie combo that was excellent! I thought of it as mexican succotash. :-) Service was also fine, but it was not very busy when I was there, and everything was clean. I'll give this 4 stars, if you stay away from the rellenos.

The service is very fast, and the food is really good, they have a full bar and very friendly servers, the prices are good and the serving portions are large, I usually have to take some home, also you get chips and salsa for free if you dine in and they are good. I hope this helps with your decision on where to eat.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
